5 Reasons Why Pilates Classes Are the Perfect Option for You
Maylands HealthCare Hub’s Semi-private Reformer Pilates
Have you been thinking about trying Pilates for ages, but keep putting it off because you’re not sure where or how to start? I have had many people who look back on their Pilates journey and can not believe they did not start earlier! The opportunities Pilates gives are limitless whether you are returning to running from an injury or you want to be able to pick up your grandchildren. The truth is, Pilates is designed for everyone. Pilates can be adapted to suit your needs. No matter your age, experience, or fitness level, there are countless reasons to give it a go. Here are five of the biggest benefits Pilates has to offer.
What Actually Happens in a Pilates Class?
If you’ve never tried Pilates before, it’s completely normal to wonder what a class actually involves. At Maylands Healthcare Hub, classes are designed to be welcoming, supportive, and suitable for a range of fitness levels. With small group sizes and a maximum of 4 people, you’ll receive plenty of guidance by our healthcare professionals and individual attention, helping you feel comfortable from the moment you walk in.
After an initial 1 on 1 appointment to establish goals and go through your history we utilise this to develop a tailored and individualised program to you which may include using our specialised Pilates equipment such as the reformer and the Wunda Chair. Don’t worry if you’re unfamiliar with the equipment—either Annabel or Kaitlin our Clinical Pilates Instructors will explain everything and guide you through each movement.
A typical session includes gentle warm-up exercises, controlled movements that focus on strength, balance, mobility, and posture. The emphasis isn’t on pushing yourself to exhaustion, but on moving with control and building confidence in your body’s abilities. Most people leave feeling stronger, more energised, and surprisingly refreshed.
5 Reasons to Give It a Go
1. It Builds Real, Functional Strength
Pilates is often associated with core training, but the benefits go far beyond what you are typically told about training your “abs”. The exercises work multiple muscle groups at once, helping you build the kind of strength that supports everyday activities, from carrying your grocery bags to playing with your kids or grandkids.
2. It’s Low-Impact and Joint-Friendly
Unlike some forms of exercise that place stress on your joints, Pilates focuses on controlled, low-impact movements. This makes it an excellent option for people of all ages, fitness levels, and those looking for a gentler way to stay active without
3. It Can Improve Posture and Reduce Everyday Aches
Many of us spend hours sitting at desks or maybe even hours of standing and bending over. Pilates helps strengthen the muscles that support good posture, which can ease tension and help reduce common aches and pains.
4. It’s a Workout for Your Mind, Too
Pilates requires concentration, coordination, and mindful breathing. Focusing on your movements helps quiet down our brain for a big day ahead or maybe even after a long day, making each session feel as refreshing for your mind as it is for your body.
5. You’ll Become Part of a Community
One of the most enjoyable aspects of Pilates is the supportive atmosphere. Our smaller class sizes create opportunities to connect with instructors and like minded people, helping you feel encouraged, motivated, and part of a welcoming community.
What to Expect at Your First Class
Starting anything new can feel a little daunting, but your first Pilates class at Maylands Healthcare Hub is likely to be much more relaxed than you expect. You will have your 1 on 1 session which will allow you to understand the equipment and your personal program to ease your nerves before joining the group setting. Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely, such as activewear or workout clothes you feel comfortable exercising in.
Classes are done with grip socks, which allow you to be safe when using the equipment and you can purchase these in our clinic if you don’t already own a pair (but watch out you might start getting addicted to collecting all the cute pairs like one of our physiotherapists/instructors Kaitlin!).
A water bottle is handy to have with you throughout the class but don’t stress if you forget we have cups and a fountain in the studio. The goal isn’t perfection; it’s simply to move, learn, and enjoy the experience.
Am I the Right fit for Clinical Pilates?
One of the biggest advantages of Clinical Pilates is how adaptable it is. Whether you’re an office worker looking to improve posture and reduce stiffness, a busy parent wanting to rebuild strength, a retiree who is focused on maintaining mobility to keep up with those busy grandkids, or someone simply looking for a safe and effective form of exercise, Clinical Pilates can be tailored to your needs.
It’s also a popular option for people returning to exercise after an injury or managing a specific condition. Because your program is guided by qualified healthcare professionals, exercises can be modified to suit your individual goals and abilities..
